Shot 86: GAG ME WITH COMPOSURE

— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership.  It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all.  You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu above.

I HATE IT!  What?  The reality that confidence trumps competence when it comes to credibility.  Yes, if you look like you know what you’re doing, more people will follow you than if you truly know what you’re doing but don’t act the part.  But not for long!  No marksman won a shooting contest on looks.  And hunters who bring the bacon are skilled.  I’m talkin’ real world here: You gotta know your stuff.

Composure versus competence.  While the former may contribute more to ascribed credibility, try leading once others determine you don’t know what to do.  Others are willing to follow when they know you know.  Appearance is good, but just show, suggests you should stay behind glass on display.  So, aim for appearance for initial appeal, but target knowledge for lasting leadership.
