Shot 272: DEVELOPING OTHERS

— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership.  It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all.  You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu at www.tomnewhouse.com.

Send them to training.  Nope!  Well now, training is not bad, but I have learned that most of what I have confidence in comes by way of experience.  I had to get it right, and I learned.
Try this:  Ask others what events of their past most contributed to their development.  Once in a while you’ll hear about a training event.  But most of the time you’ll hear about difficult experiences persons were thrust into, and they had to figure it out.  Last week we identified the importance of development.  This week the subject is how to develop others.  Fact is that others develop most when given a role/task/project with substantial risk to them and potential payoff to them or their organization.  Add to that feedback which is accepted, reflected on, and used for new behavior and you have a winning formula for development.
