HMMM! COMPETITION certainly sharpens one’s focus. Rudy and I might have competed with others in a shooting competition, but we definitely did not compete with each other. We completed one another. As the marksman, he made me better; and I made him better. Well, I’m just an old rifle, but I’d say, “compete outwardly; complete inwardly.”
You produce a minefield when you set up systems for team members to compete with each other. If they are team members, they need systems to complete one another—to bring out the best in each other. Now, in highly productive teams, members will challenge each other and demand complimentary performance. That’s not the same as competition. That’s accountability. Besides in highly productive teams, fellow members want to contribute.
