IT’S A CALL FOR FOCUS. In the military, one stands at attention as commanded, with rifle over the shoulder. In civilian life, we give attention…or, not.
Too often it’s not. And giving attending to others when they are talking is really difficult. We want to talk, to participate, to be recognized, to meet our own felt needs. We are self-focused. We don’t really attend to others, and we don’t really listen. But if we did give undivided attention, we would enable others to see themselves and their issues clearly. They would be invited to think through possible solutions and develop actions that would empower them…and energize their organizations. We’d be leading them to be effective.
