— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership. It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all. You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu above. —
IN THE WESTERN COMEDY City Slickers, Curly challenges Mitch to find the “one thing” most important in his life. What’s really driving him? For me as a single shot rifle, I decided long ago that the really important thing for me was to be accurate. I might aspire to other distinctions, but they would confuse me and may not really fit. I’d be frustrated.
I’m going to be direct. Get real! Try this: What are you good at, really—not what would you like to be good at. No, what is it that is you? In there you will find a mission. And this: What really has to be done to be successful—the main things that when done others will fall in place. You have the key to project management. One more: What really should drive a decision—the main thing, not all the clutter that would be nice. Welcome to decision making extraordinaire. Now rapid fire: Really listen; really tell it like it is; really apply self-discipline; really care for others; really…. Well, if you’re stripping off the dressing, washing away the wishes; and dismissing the distractions while instead dealing in truth, clarity, and commitment, you are on the way to getting real, and getting real effective.
