— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership. It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all. You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu above. —
I HAD MANY SHOOTERS but only one marksman. That was Rudy—this overweight farmer with an amputated leg. He got the most from his actions, not wasting any. How did he maximize them? Several things, but, for sure, one was concentration. He was focused on what he was doing. In his hands, I felt his purpose and confident that I would hit the mark.
So, it is for leaders: Those teams whose leaders focus on one thing—the main thing—have a good chance of hitting the mark. What’s the desired outcome? What’s the leader’s intent? Employees don’t want to merely go through motions. They want to follow, to be led to something. They want to score, to win, to bring home the prize. Give them the priority in simple terms, and watch their engagement rise, and with it, confidence, creativity, and even competence.
