Shot 330: TRY YOUR HAND

–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–

THAT’S AN OLD EXPRESSION.  It’s actually incomplete.  Try your hand at xxxxx.  The “at” is important.  Try your hand at shooting, at handling a big rifle, at hunting.  These are examples from an old .22 single-shot.
Leaders, try your hand at influence—getting control of a larger share of the project, process, outcome, whatever.  Yep, you have more influence yourself.  It’s like getting a bigger piece of the pie.  You’re the winner, right?  Not so fast!  What if you go with another approach:  Enlarge the pie.  That means more overall influence.  And how does a leader do that?   Make the team more influential, or the organization.  Augment its awareness, increase its development, grow its capability, enhance its responsibility, escalate its collaboration, whatever.  Leaders may then have less influence themselves, but success will flow more, quantitatively and qualitatively, because there will be more influence.
