–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–
TEAR INTO THEM. SIC ‘EM. With that command, I saw a farm dog go after cows, sheep, or pigs with reckless abandonment. The animals were so frenzied, I could hardly hit one with my single shot. Actually, I tried to shoot the dog…but that’s another story.
Too often leaders have only a sic ‘em mentality. The key word in this observation is only. Drive, intense drive, is quite often good, but if that is all followers see, it’s not healthy for an organization. Now, add empathy to drive, and you have something valuable. According to research by Zenger Folkman, drive without empathy yields a mere 1% probability of extraordinary leadership, but drive with empathy yields 89%. For success, let goals be the focus of “sic ‘em,” not people. People need leaders who are good role models, who develop others, who seek feedback, and who inspire.
