Shot 297: A BUM STEER

–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–

SOUNDS REDUNDANT.  In my world all steers were bummers.  By definition a steer was a bum.  Okay, okay: I was a farm rifle—give me a break.  Until today, I did not know that a bum steer was spurious information that misleads someone.  I can see that acting on false information would be a bummer.

Leaders, do you set yourself up for bum steers?  Of course, you would not want to do this.  But you might do so unintentionally.  Here are some culprits:  Listening only to preferred sources, hearing mostly loud or frequent voices, consulting those who think like you do, avoiding feedback, trusting your own sentiments, proceeding on instinct, assuming data, jumping to conclusions, trusting those who have been right before, basing the future merely on the past, and heeding your biases.  You can add to the list.  How might you avoid bum steers?  In general, get real and gather multiple inputs.
