Shot 236: DEAD RIGHT

— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership.  It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all.  You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu at www.tomnewhouse.com.

SOME PEOPLE DIE BEING RIGHT.  In other words, they died not knowing anything other than what they thought was right.  Let this rifle play with words:  They were dead right.
Leaders, today we will surface the illusion of certainty.  You see, our brains want to project certainty, and, too often, we “find” it before we should.  Similarly, we like stability.  But leadership is fundamentally about change.  We lead through new challenges, new goals, new products, new markets, new teammates, etc.  See the word new; that’s change.  Try curiosity:  Ask questions, pursue different thinking.  Consider some perspective by Albert Einstein: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”  Applicable is this quip: The mind is like a parachute; it functions best when open.
