IN MANY WAYS I was part of the family. Well not really, but I felt like it, because I was so often included. Anyway, I observed how important it is to have a family. One’s own personal family is the best, but sometimes feeling care and respect can be had at work.
Seems like every leader nowadays want to invoke “family,” e.g., the department family, the company family. Family is the new “team.” Gag me with a spoon. But wait sometimes it’s real: People really can feel they belong, and they really can feel cared for. When that happens, people usually develop and prosper. Okay, let’s say you don’t believe me. Try leading when people know they don’t belong, and they are certain no one cares about them. Then you can’t, can you? Can’t lead, that is.
