Shot 160: BABIES AND BULLDOGS

— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership.  It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all.  You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu at www.tomnewhouse.com.

FOLKS ARE DIFFERENT.  But I have noticed they are alike in that each person has emotional needs.  I guess I learned that from Rudy.  He seemed to understand these needs and meet them, regardless of how soft or tough they may seem.
Even executives are big emotional bundles.  Of course, all employees are, and you, as the leader, may be a baby or a bulldog yourself (deep down).   People like to be participants, they like to have their ego stroked, they want to be treated like caring, sensitive souls, even when they don’t show the same concerns for others.   You don’t “write them off” because it’s through people that you get done what your organization needs.  So, instead you treat them like people, knowing that people have feelings, emotional needs, that must be met.
