“THAT’S JUST THE WAY I AM,” say those who can’t find any other excuse. Trouble is being yourself can get you in trouble. But I have noticed that being oneself in just the right way can keep you from getting in trouble. Interested?
We’re talking interpersonal trouble. You know, conflict and such. You can’t stop being you, but you can adapt to the other’s style a little. Yes, you can! Say the other person is so analytical. Push for reasoning, facts, and consistency. You have all that within you, just push it. If they are resoundingly amiable, show friendship, support, and gentleness—ask, don’t tell. What’s happening here? You are tapping into your capability, albeit not forfeiting your style. You, thus, stay you while making the other comfortable. In this way conflict can be avoided. You both win.
