Shot 130: RHYME OR REASON

— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership.  It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all.  You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu above.

Drive sober or get pulled over.  Birds of a feather flock together.  Famous Amos makes the best cookies.  Have you gone crazy? you ask.  Maybe, but no more than those who have a bias for rhyme over reason.  It’s interesting to me, as a rifle, that people believe (so called) principles that rhyme more than data itself.  Not, me.  I respond equally to the manipulations of the sane and the insane.
Rhymes make ideas seem truthful.  Some indeed are truisms, but not all.  In fact, people do judge ideas as more truthful when presented as rhymes.  Leaders, however, should be wary of rhymes along with other forms of reduced thinking.  They, instead, should be attentive to well-reasoned arguments based on data.  Anything less would be insanity.  Unfortunately, biases reign, probably because they come so naturally.  They are easy to absorb.  Remember easy is not accuracy; it’s merely easy peasy.  (Oops.)
