Shot 229: HAD BETTER GET BETTER

— To follow is a bullet of wisdom on leadership.  It comes from Tom’s rifle, named Shot, who has seen it all.  You’ll get the drift by clicking Blog in the menu at www.tomnewhouse.com.

MY FAVORITE, MARKSMAN, Rudy, often gave directions or advice with the phrase, “Had Better.”  He’d say things like, “Had better plow the south forty,” or, “Had better leave the breach open on that rifle.”
If Rudy were a leadership advisor, he would likely say, “Had better get better.”  You see, leaders should never be satisfied with the way things are—the status quo. Not only should they strive to improve personally, they should develop that mindset in their teams.  Teams that are continually improving, tend to have high performance.  Maybe this column is repeating this advice:  When you’re green, you grow; when you’re ripe, you rot.
