YOU GOT ME! But I’ll bite: Motivation? The trigger for doing something (note the gun language). Hygiene? Staying clean. How did I do?
Well, not bad. But Fredrick Herzberg would have seen things differently. He had a theory that has proven out. It was that workplace stimuli typically regarded as motivational may only be hygienical. In other words, the stimuli may satisfy, but not motivate; they are necessary to prevent dissatisfaction but insufficient for motivation. Consider work conditions. They might be safe and comfortable, but employees expect that, and they are not thereby motivated. Responsibility, a different stimulus, however, is likely motivating. To think like Herzberg, regard extrinsic factors as hygiene and intrinsic factors as motivation.
