–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–
HOW BUILD A FENCE? I saw Rudy train Tommy. They built a fence together. Tommy learned by doing. Now, Rudy could have told Tommy how to build a fence and then critiqued Tommy later, but the built fence then may not have been acceptable. (For no extra charge—ha—I will tell you of a superior fence: Horse high, chicken tight, and bull strong.)
Fences and leadership—what’s the point? Think development: One can tell a trainee how and then later provide feedback, or one can do a task with a trainee, showing techniques while proceeding. Yes, the latter approach means the leader will actually do the job too, but the first pass will likely be done right and a trainee will be trained. Who wins? Everyone: leader, trainee, and recipient of the product. Sometimes the leader won’t get involved directly, but the leader should ensure that an expert works with a trainee.
