–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–
I MAY NOT LIKE IT. But as a rifle I do what I am told. Good character or bad, I still fire a true shot when prepared and prompted. I might secretly hope the good guys win, but who knows?
Leaders should look for employees with good character. “Of course,” you say. But do you actually pursue good character? Too often character is assumed to be good. (Ha.) Or, assessment of character is deemed too difficult. Reference checks can help along with appropriate interviews. Here are some interview approaches: 1) Have a prospect tell of a time when faced with results versus values and how they handled it; 2) have a prospect tell with examples why others are drawn to them; 3) ask a prospect how they are growing their character; 4) have a prospect identify what has marked successful organizations they have been part of and how they contributed. For all four suggested approaches you have to listen—listen and evaluate.
