Shot 401: CAN VS. WILL

Shot 401: CAN VS. WILL

Shot 401: CAN VS. WILL

–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–

OF COURSE, THERE’S A DIFFERENCE.  “I can shoot a bear” versus “I will shoot a bear.”  Ability contrasts with determination.  If a bear is involved, and I, a small rifle, am the shooter, both “can shoot” and “will shoot” are dumb.  I should not shoot a bear.
Now consider a leader.  What can a leader do and what will a leader do?  A leader ought to have ability before determining a course of action.  But too many times leaders set courses that ignore capability.  They should not proceed.  Yes, stretch goals are good, but stretch is key.  Something—skill, resource, or experience, for example—must be in place first.  “Will” may follow “can,” but “can” cannot follow “will.”  That said, recognize that with “will” a leader may find a “can” to cultivate.
