–Below is a leadership bullet from Tom’s rifle named Shot–
IS IT REAL? I’m all for safety, but can one be safe without feeling safe? I say, yes. But are there benefits to feeling safe? I say, sure. But, I will add, that feeling safe should accompany being safe. For us rifles, safety is big. I never before thought about feelings.
Leaders are like that: They rarely think about employees feeling safe. They especially don’t think about employees being psychologically safe. They should. Employees who feel psychologically safe are inclined to be committed, working hard and long because they want to. To promote psychological safety, encourage different perspectives, resolve team conflict, get to know your people’s needs, and be adaptable. The goal is not to lower standards (or to be nice); it is to make others feel safe so they perform (and it’s the right thing to do).
